Preparing the exterior of your home for painting.
By Aaron Dix of the123shop
HOW TO PAINT THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME If you are planning to paint your own home or if you just want to have a little knowledge about painting before hiring a painter, this article may be for you. The first step to ensuring a quality exterior paint job is ensuring that the surface that you are painting is clean and that all loose and flaking paint is removed. A quality power-washer is the best and most efficient way of both cleaning and removal of flaking paint. A power-washer with a 3000 PSI capability is your best bet (even if you dont need to use all its power). Also a power-washer with the capability of detergent application is also best. Applying a light TSP detergent will help to kill any moss or other growths on your homes siding and trim. If you do this it will be important to rinse without detergent afterwords. Start from the top and wash down so that any flakes work their way down. Keep the wand approximately 12 inches from the surface and use a steady side to side motion. If you have a shingled siding it may be best to leave power-washing to a professional to ensure that water is not pushed behind the shingles. Using a lower PSI setting for shingles is recommended as well as keeping the wand pointed at a downward angle. Power-washing should remove dirt, moss, chalking, and even most flaking paint. The next step is to allow the surface to fully dry. We recommend a full week of dry time before starting to paint. The next step is to begin the paint preperation stage. The first step is to scrape off any loose paint that the power-washer was not able to dispose of. Lay drop-sheets or bed sheets on the ground and over plants to collect falling paint flakes. Anywhere that paint is lifted at all from the previous coat should be scraped off. Then you need to fill any holes with an exterior fill compound. We recommend a product called Dynamax. Once you have filled all holes and cracks it is time to begin sanding. If you have a lot of sanding to do you would save a lot of time by purchasing or renting a commercial grade rotary sander. Sand all areas where paint came off and sand fill smooth. Try to carefully feather edges of missing paint to painted areas. If the surface is smooth (especially trim) it is advisable to sand all glossy paint areas to lightly score the surface to ensure proper adhesion of the paint. The next step is to caulk all trim where it is needed. Simply apply a bead of caulking using a caulking gun to the areas in need and run your finger along it to push it in and make a clean line. Allow this to dry for one full day before painting. Once this is done all areas with bare wood showing need to be primed with a quality exterior primer. You are now ready to start painting and that is a whole separate topic. Good luck.
